So, you're considering getting a Betta fish. Though usually thought of as just another easy to care for fish that sits in its tank, there's more to it than that and it's a smart idea to make sure this would be the right pet for you before going out to buy one. Because I'm passionate about Betta keeping, I like to help make sure those considering getting Bettas have the right information, so read on down the page to see what caring for a Betta is like!
To start with, there are a few things you should be aware of. For starters, Betta fish need warm conditions (water around 80 degrees fahrenheit), which is more than a lot of us here in the US or Europe keep our homes at. This really shouldn't be a problem, however, as all you need to do is makes sure is go and buy a small aquarium heater than will regulate the temperature to be toastyand kept at 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. This is an easy fix, and is often fixed at the cost of a small heater, depending onhow big of a tank you have...
Which brings us to our next topic: how big of tank you should get. There's nothing worse than someone on a messageboard who wrongly recommends to people that Bettas will be fine in a small living space. And it goes far beyond what should be even considered humane, they are recommending you buy those dumb bowls and Betta "cubes" that pet stores sell, often containing less than a gallon of water. In reality, it's not at all difficult to see why this fautly info gets tossed around everywhere; because pet stores sometimes recommend those tanks but but if you want to give your Betta the best life possible, at least buy a 5 gallon aquarium for him, which means you'll need to find a place where the tank will fit and have light during the day, while being dark in the night time so your pet can sleep.
If you've gotten this far and you're still in the game, then good for you, because any other care considerations are minor, for example the actual cost of the Betta, and buying a filter/monitoring water quality, so now let's talk about the fun aspects of Betta care.
As an example, I always thought it was cool that you actually can form a bond with your Betta fish. Betta fish associate feeding time with seeing their owner early on, and will get excited and dance around at the sight of you home from work, school, etc. Additionally, if you find yourself at home a lot (for example someone working from home or typing up an article on his computer like me), will notice that these fish will undoubtedly begin to swim over to the tank side that is nearest to you and stare at you, they really do!
With the massive amount of personality and reward for such a small investment, it comes as no surprise to me that so many people own Bettas nowadays. In any case, congratulations on taking the first step and coming here to get some quality information before you buy a Betta.
